"A lot of these African American soldiers felt like, of course, America was going to accept them, but they found out that was not the case," Washington said in the press notes for Amsterdam. They were a segregated regiment of Black and Puerto Rican soldiers who were sent to France to defend the USA, only to be forced to serve with the French army as their fellow soldiers refused to serve with non-white soldiers. ![]() The main one, outside of the conspiracy, is that Burt and Harold's army unit was inspired by the Harlem Hell Fighters Regiment. However, there are other elements that were also inspired by real-life events. In case it needs to be said, the other elements of the conspiracy, such as the death of Meekins, were invented for the movie. Like we see play out in Amsterdam, it's unclear how close this coup was to being realised, but it's a forgotten piece of history that could have changed the world itself had things gone differently. It might sound as far-fetched as the rest of Amsterdam's plot, but a secret conspiracy like this did happen in the 1930s in the USA. The conspiracy is exposed and Burt, Harold and Valerie end up saving the day thanks to Dillenbeck's intervention. ![]() However, Dillenbeck ends up doing nothing of the sort, despite the threats of Valerie's brother Tom Voze (Rami Malek), who is in on the whole conspiracy. He says that he's going to give a speech at the New York veterans' reunion gala that will effectively start the revolution in the US. He wants nothing to do with becoming a dictator, so with the help of Burt and co, Dillenbeck tricks the shadowy cabal by pretending to be on their side. The convoluted plot of Amsterdam eventually leads Burt, Harold and Valerie to the home of General Gil Dillenbeck (Robert De Niro), who they discover could actually hold the key to exposing the whole conspiracy they find themselves wrapped up in.Ī group of wealthy American businessmen are trying to woo Dillenbeck to be the figurehead of their attempt to overthrow the current White House administration. Little do they know that the general's death is just one aspect of a much wider conspiracy that threatens the very heart of the US.īut in order to reveal just how this conspiracy really did play out in real life, we need to go into some spoilers for Amsterdam, so look away now if you haven't seen the movie yet.ĭisney Amsterdam true story: What was the Business Plot? ![]() They all become embroiled in a murder mystery that sees Burt and Harold accused of killing former Army general Bill Meekins (Ed Begley Jr). None of its characters are based on real people, but it is actually inspired by a forgotten piece of real history.įor the most part, Amsterdam actually just about the friendship between three people in the 1930s: doctor Burt Berendsen (Christian Bale), nurse Valerie Voze (Margot Robbie) and lawyer Harold Woodsman (John David Washington). The movie claims that "a lot of this really happened", but it's said with tongue firmly-in-check as it's largely a fictional comic caper. Amsterdam has now arrived on Disney+ for all subscribers if you missed the all-star new movie on its cinema release back in October.
